Brooklyn park visitor struck by lawnmower debris

An entrance to Brooklyn Park

A woman injured while using the Brooklyn Community Park filed suit against the city and park district because debris propelled by a lawnmower struck her.

Theresa Atkins claims that while she was lawfully at the park on July 27, 2005, city employees were cutting the lawn. A brick lying in the grass was struck and a piece of it shot in the air and hit her, she claims.

According to the suit, the city knew or should have known that bricks were abandoned in the grass and that it could be propelled by the blades of the mower.

Atkins claims she suffered injuries internally and externally that caused physical and mental pain and anguish, disability and disfigurement, lost wages and became liable for medical expenses.

Represented by Dennis Field of Waterloo, Akins is seeking damages in excess of $50,000, plus all costs of the suit.
