Patricia Guy of Ripley, Miss. is seeking more than $100,000 from Motel 6 in Caseyville for an exacerbated bed bug bite.
According to the suit filed in St. Clair County Circuit Court May 10, Guy awoke on the morning of May 11, 2004, and began experiencing extreme itching to her knee and observed a white bump near the area.
Guy claims she reported to the desk clerk that she believed she was bitten by something while she slept.
She claims the next morning her knee became painful and started to swell so she soaked it in warm water to decrease the swelling, but it did not improve.
Guy claims that on May 15, 2004, when the knee did not improve, she went to Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis and was treated with a strong antibiotic and admitted.
According to the complaint, Guy had erythema and swelling of the right knee extending down to the leg, with an ulcer at the initial insect bite.
Guy claims an incision and drain surgery was performed on May 17, 2004. She was then discharged with instructions on how to change the packing.
She claims the motel failed in its duty to present its establishment as a safe abode for patrons who pay to lodge in that facility.
According to Guy, the insect bite caused her to suffer severe injuries, pain and suffering, emotional distress, lost wages and benefits and medical expenses.
She is represented by Linda Kendall Garner of Memphis.
