Ann Callis elected chief judge in Madison County

Ann Callis

Circuit Judge Ann Callis has been elected to serve a two-year term as chief judge of Madison County. She will replace Circuit Judge Edward Ferguson, who served nearly three years as chief, on May 1.

A secret ballot vote was conducted at a circuit judges meeting today.

Callis, of Troy, was appointed judge in December 1999 at age 35 after the death of 3rd Circuit Judge J. Lawrence Keshner.

She is the daughter of powerful Madison County plaintiff's attorney Lance Callis.

Ann Callis previously served as an associate judge from 1994 to 1999.

She graduated St. Louis University School of Law in 1990.

Callis also was:

  • Former clerk to Illinois Supreme Court Justice Horace Calvo;

  • Formerly assistant state's attorney in Madison and St. Clair Counties; and

  • Practiced privately with attorney Bruce Cook of Belleville and for her father, Lance Callis, in Granite City.
