MADISON - ST. CLAIR RECORD

Democrat candidate for the 5th Appellate Court Bruce Stewart has handily defeated his challenger Bill Berry.

In unofficial results, Stewart has received 60 percent of the vote (40,700 votes) to Berry's 40 percent, or 27,387 votes in tbe district which encompasses the state's 37 southern-most counties.

Voters were split in Madison and St. Clair counties.

With all 232 precincts reporting in Madison County, Berry earned 55 percent of the vote in today's primary election.

Berry had 6,888 votes to his well-funded challenger's 5,620 votes.

However, in St. Clair County, results favored Stewart.

With 188 of 192 precincts reporting in St. Clair County, Stewart has 60 percent of the vote (6,944 total) to Berry's 40 percent (4,514 total).

The bulk of the district's votes lie in the Metro-East.

In the Republican race for governor, Dairyman Jim Oberweis has easily won the Metro-East vote over Judy Baar Topinka.

But across the state, Topinka has an edge over Oberweis.

With nearly all St. Clair County precincts reporting, Oberweis has 54 percent of the vote (2,959). Topinka, a distant second, has 27 percent of the vote (1,477). Bill Brady has 11 percent, or 574 votes.

In Madison County, Oberweis got 49 percent (4,734 votes) to Topinka's 30 percent (2,960 votes), and to Brady's 14 percent (1,349 votes).

In the race for Republican lieutenant governor, Steve Rauschenberger won 40 percent of the vote in St. Clair County and 43 percent in Madison County.
