A Madison County woman is suing Argosy Casino in Alton alleging she was burned when she spilled a hot cup of coffee on her hand.
Deborah Stinger filed a lawsuit on May 4 in Madison County Circuit Court against Alton Casino LLC d/b/a Argosy Casino Alton of Springfield, Illinois, alleging negligence.
According to the suit, Argosy Casino customarily provides complimentary beverages to its clientele. Stinger, a customer on the defendant’s premises on or about Sept. 20, 2013, obtained a courtesy cup of coffee at the beverage station. The complaint states that when she turned from the beverage area, the coffee spilled on her hand, allegedly causing severe burns due to the liquid’s "excessively" high temperature.
The plaintiff claims the defendant knew or should have known of the coffee’s extreme temperature; and that it failed to exercise ordinary care to properly prepare and maintain the brew’s degree of warmth.
Stinger claims loss of mobility, permanent scarring and medical expenses totaling $4,360.61.
Alleging pain and suffering, mental anguish, lost wages, lost earning capacity and loss of pleasure in life, she seeks damages in excess of $50,000, plus attorneys’ fees and costs.
