Patient sues doctor over botched epidural

A Montgomery County man is suing a Belleville doctor and Memorial Medical Group over a botched epidural during a procedure to address lower back pain.

Derek Compton of Litchfield filed a lawsuit on April 16 in St. Clair County Circuit Court against Dr. Anthony Anderson and Memorial Medical Group LLC (MMG) of Belleville, alleging negligence.

According to the complaint, on April 16, 2013, Anderson, an employee of MMG and an anesthesiologist and pain management specialist, administered an epidural procedure on Compton during surgery to address low back pain.

The epidural injection was the last of three given to the patient, the suit states. Compton alleges professional negligence and breach of duty, accusing the doctor of failing to warn him of risks, penetrating his spinal canal with the needle, using contaminated medications in the injection and failing to stop the procedure after Compton suffered extreme pain during the process.

The plaintiff claims he endured blood vessel and nerve damage, specifically a condition called arachnoiditis, medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost income and earning capacity and permanent disability.

Compton seeks damages in excess of $50,000, plus attorney fees and costs. He is represented by attorney Paul Johnson of SL Chapman in St. Louis.
