School bus driver sues motorist over accident

A Madison County school bus driver has sued a motorist, citing injuries she suffered in a 2013 accident.

Billie Beavers filed a lawsuit filed April 6 in Madison County Circuit Court against Michael Carter of Godfrey.

According to the complaint, on May 1. 2013, Beavers was driving a school bus south on Meadowlark Drive at Tremont Drive in Godfrey, and Carter was driving his 2000 Plymouth Neon west on Tremont Drive at Meadowlark Drive. The suit says Carter entered the intersection "when it was unsafe to do so and collided [with the bus]," causing Beavers to suffer injuries.

The lawsuit states Carter failed to keep his vehicle under control, failed to brake in time to avoid striking Beavers, failed to steer to avoid striking Beavers and attempted to enter the intersection when it was unsafe.

Beavers seeks damages in excess of $50,000, plus costs. She is represented by attorney Samuel Mormino of Mormino, Velloff and Snider in Alton.

Madison County Circuit Court, case number: 15-L-439.
