A Rhode Island woman has filed suit against the company that manufactures a drug used to combat high cholesterol, saying she suffered from diabetes after taking it.
Lucille Berling filed a lawsuit Jan. 23 in St. Clair County Circuit Court against Pfizer Inc.
According to the complaint, Berling was taking the medication Lipitor in an attempt to reduce the amount of cholesterol and other fatty substances in her blood. As a result, however, Berling claims she developed type 2 diabetes.
She blames defendant Pfizer for contributing to her development of the disease, alleging the drug manufacturer continued to market the medication as safe, even though it knew of the link to the development of type 2 diabetes.
Berling alleges failure to warn, design defect, negligence, negligent misrepresentation, fraud and breach of warranty against Pfizer.
She seeks a judgment of more than $450,000, plus costs, attorney fees and other relief the court deems just.
Berling is represented by attorney John J. Driscoll of The Driscoll Firm in St. Louis.
St. Clair County Circuit Court case number: 15-L-43.
