A Belleville couple alleges their property sustained damages when it was flooded after a water line erupted.
Michael Walsh Keeley and Rachel Keeley filed a lawsuit Dec. 23 in St. Clair County Circuit Court against the Illinois American Water Company.
According to the complaint, the Keeleys' basement at 16 S. 72nd St. in Belleville was flooded Dec. 23, 2013, due to a ruptured water line servicing their home and the surrounding area. The line, however, was not on their property, the complaint states.
Because of the flooding, the Keeleys suffered damages to their walls and floors, the suit states. Their home also allegedly developed a mold problem and has suffered from a diminished value.
The plaintiffs blame the water company for causing their damages, saying it negligently lacked proper care in the operation of its water system.
The Keeleys seek a judgment of more than $100,000, plus costs.
The plaintiffs are represented by attorney Stephen M. Kernan of Cook, Ysursa, Bartholomew, Brauer and Shevlin in Belleville.
St. Clair County Circuit Court case number: 14-L-819.
