To the Editor:
In a move to perpetuate more asbestos lawsuits for years to come, Illinois Democrats passed SB 2221 which removes any statute of limitations for asbestos related cases. The current law limits lawsuits to 10 years after a person has been exposed to asbestos.
Since asbestos has not been used as a building material in homes since the 1980s, the number of cases has begun to decline. Trial lawyers pushed for SB 2221 to prop up their dwindling number of asbestos law suits. This bill will also significantly increase the number of parties that can be held liable for asbestos related cases and could include supervising architects, design engineers, and public school boards.
The bill now goes on to the Governor for approval.
