Woman alleges she was fired from Granite City Wal-Mart for filing workers' comp claim

A former employee of Wal-Mart alleges she was fired from the company's Granite City store for filing a workers' compensation claim.

Cynthia Mason filed a lawsuit Sept. 15 in Madison County Circuit Court against Walmart Stores Inc.

Mason alleges she was hurt on the job Feb. 3, immediately notified her supervisor of her injury and applied for benefits allowed under Illinois' Workers' Compensation Act. On Aug. 9, Mason alleges she was fired as retaliation for filing a claim against the store.

Walmart is accused of retaliatory discharge. Mason seeks more than $100,000 in damages for lost wages and benefits plus the costs of the lawsuit.

She is represented by attorney Keith Short of Edwardsville.

Madison County Circuit Court case number: 14-L-1275.
