Clarkson Eyecare accused of failing to diagnose macular detachment

A patient is suing a Madison County optometrist and eye care clinic for allegedly failing to diagnose and treat a serious condition affecting his vision.

Roger Watkins filed a complaint Sept. 5 in Madison County Circuit Court against optometrist Chad Baker, Erin Enright and Clarkson Eyecare Inc. of St. Louis. 3F Vision, doing business as Clarkson Eyecare of Illinois, also is named as a defendant.

On Sept. 5, 2012, according to the lawsuit, Baker and Enright examined Watkins' right eye at a Clarkson Eyecare facility. The patient says the optometrist and optometrist technician failed to properly dilate the eye and failed to properly recognize a condition "that led to retina/macular detachment." Watkins says he went multiple times to the clinic for follow-up care but the condition went ignored.

Baker accuses the defendants of negligence, saying they caused a serious eye condition "to go undiagnosed and untreated for a substantial period of time, resulting in severe and permanent injuries to his right eye." He asks for more than $50,000 in damages from each of the defendants for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, disability, disfigurement and increased risk of future injuries.

Attorney Frederick W. Keck with the Weilmuenster Law Group in Belleville represents Watkins.

Madison County Circuit Court case number: 14-L-1224.
