An East St. Louis trucking company is accused of negligence in the death of an Effingham man.
Javier Vasquez Lira, special administrator of the estate of Omar Lira, filed a lawsuit against Beelman Truck Company of Hammond, Ind., and Kenneth Weaver on Aug. 28 in St. Clair County Circuit Court.
According to the complaint, on July 25 Weaver was driving a Beelman-owned tractor-trailer east on Route H near the intersection with state Highway 51 in Perry County. Omar Lira was driving south on Highway 51 near the same intersection.
Weaver allegedly failed to yield to a stop sign, made an improper left turn, pulled into Lira's lane of travel and crashed with his vehicle. Lira was killed in the crash, the lawsuit says.
Javier Lira accuses Weaver and the owner of the tractor-trailer, Beelman Trucking Company, of negligence. He asks for more than $100,000 in damages for funeral costs, grief and sorrow.
Attorneys William K. Holland and Christopher A. Allen of St. Louis, represent Lira.
The case number is St. Clair County Circuit Court case 14-L-615.
