Client First Medical Transportation sued after woman thrown from wheelchair in vehicle

A Madison County woman is suing over claims she was injured when she was thrown from her wheelchair in a commercial vehicle.

Shirley D. Smith filed a lawsuit July 28 in the St. Clair County Circuit Court against Client First Medical Transportation Inc., citing negligence.

According to the complaint, Smith, who uses a wheelchair, was picked up by Client First for transportation to a medical appointment July 10, 2013, when the driver slammed on the brakes, causing Smith to be thrown from her wheelchair and sustain a fractured femur and neck pain. Client First is accused of failing to properly secure Smith's wheelchair and following too closely to the vehicle in front.

Smith is seeking more than $50,000 in damages. She is being represented in the case by attorney Eric J. Carlson of Byron, Carlson, Petri & Kalb LLC in Edwardsville.

St. Clair County case number 15-L-567.
