Taylorville Memorial accused of malpractice in St. Clair County suit

A St. Clair County man is suing over claims that an emergency room failed to diagnose his abscess.

Robert Furgeson Sr. and Anna Furgeson filed a lawsuit July 21 in the St. Clair County Circuit Court against Barry Mulshine M.D., Matthew Yociss M.D., Taylorville Memorial Hospital and Orthopaedic Center of Illinois Ltd.

According to the complaint, Furgeson presented to Taylorville Memorial Hospital with pain between his shoulder blades and a fever Nov. 4, when he came under the treatment of Dr. Mulshine of the Orthopaedic Center and Dr. Yociss. Furgeson says the defendants failed to admit him, order infectious disease tests, or administer antibiotics. The defendant is accused of failing to diagnose Furgeson's epidural abscess.

The Furgesons are seeking more than $75,000 in damages. They are being represented in the case by attorney Samantha S. Unsell of Keefe & Keefe P.C. in Belleville.

St. Clair County Circuit Court Case No. 14-L-558.
