IHOP and customer sued over alleged assault at Edwardsville restaurant

A man is suing after he was allegedly harassed and battered at an Edwardsville restaurant.

Ruben R. Villarreal filed suit June 3 in Madison County Circuit Court against Glen West Enterprises Inc., doing business as IHOP No. 1369, and Steven J. Ragusa.

According to the complaint, Villarreal was at the defendant restaurant, 1201 E. Edwardsville Road, Edwardsville, on July 1, 2012. On that date defendant Ragusa was a customer at the restaurant and proceeded to make racial and derogatory comments to the plaintiff and the group he was with, leading to Ragusa assaulting the plaintiff unprovoked before fleeing the restaurant. Villarreal suffered severe and permanent injuries from the attack, according to the suit.

The defendant business is being sued for negligence and willful and wanton acts or omissions, while Ragusa is being sued for battery.

Villarreal is seeking damages in excess of $50,000, plus costs. He is represented by Alton attorney Patrick G. King of King Law Firm LLC.
