St. Elizabeth's employee sues electric company over equipment left on floor

A woman has filed suit against the electric company she claims left equipment on the floor, causing her to fall.

Ruthann Goff filed suit June 4 in the St. Clair County Circuit Court against Guarantee Electric Company.

According to the complaint, Goff was working for St. Elizabeth’s Hospital on Aug. 27, when she slipped on a plastic electric tie left on the floor. The tie had been discarded by employees working for the defendant, which had been hired to replace and install a fire alarm system in the hospital, according to the complaint.

Because of her fall, Goff sustained severe and permanently disabling injuries and suffered great pain and mental anguish, the suit states. She also was physically and emotionally disabled, incurred costs and lost wages, the complaint says.

Goff blames Guarantee for causing her injuries, saying it negligently failed to supervise and direct the work being performed at the hospital, failed to provide a competent superintendent and assistants, failed to keep the premises free from the accumulation of waste materials and failed to warn there may be debris in the working area.

Goff is seeking a judgment of more than $50,000, plus costs. She is being represented by Grey Chatham Jr. of Chatham and Baricevic in Swansea.

St. Clair County Circuit Court case number 14-L-474.
