City of Highland sued over sewage back-up

A Highland woman is suing over claims the city of Highland's negligence caused damage to her basement.

Michelle Genteman filed a lawsuit April 16 in the Madison County Circuit Court against the city of Highland, citing negligence.

Genteman claims she suffered damages to her residence at 1713 Pine St. in Highland after a couple of sewer backups April 2 and 3. According to the complaint, the city of Highland negligently maintained and operated the sewer system, resulting in four inches of sewage backing up into Genteman's basement, damaging her furnace, water heather, washer, dryer and area rug.

Genteman is seeking damages in excess of $50,000 and court costs. She is being represented in the case by attorney Stephen M. Kernan of Cook, Ysursa, Bartholomew, Brauer and Shevlin LTD.

Madison County Circuit Court Case No. 14-L-572.
