Driver of developmentally disabled adults blamed for causing collision

A woman has filed suit against the driver who she claims failed to obey a stop sign and struck her vehicle.

Lisa R. Striano-Bates filed a lawsuit March 13 in the St. Clair County Circuit Court against Brittany S. Tassello and Trinity Services Inc.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff was driving a 2009 Nissan Cube south on North Charles Street near its intersection with East D Street in Belleville on May 23, when defendant Tassello, who was driving a 2008 Chevrolet Uplander van for defendant Trinity Services east on East D Street, attempted to make a left-hand turn.

However, Tassello, who was transporting at least three developmentally disabled adults in the van with her, failed to obey a stop sign and struck Striano-Bates’s vehicle on the right side, according to the complaint.

Because of the collision, Striano-Bates sustained severe and permanent injuries, experienced disability and disfigurement, experienced physical pain and mental anguish and incurred medical costs, the suit states. She also has been unable to perform her usual activities, the complaint says.

Striano-Bates blames Tassello for causing the collision, saying she negligently failed to keep the van under proper control, failed to see Striano-Bates’s vehicle, failed to keep a proper lookout, failed to yield the right-of-way and made an improper left turn.

Striano-Bates is seeking a judgment of more than $100,000, plus costs. She is being represented by Stephen C. Buser of the Law Office of Stephen C. Buser in Columbia.

St. Clair County Circuit Court case number 14-L-216.
