Company accused of firing man after he sustained on-the-job injuries

A Swansea company is accused of firing one of its workers after he sustained an injury while working.

Freddie Speaks filed a lawsuit March 6 in the St. Clair County Circuit Court against Century Brass Works.

In his complaint, Speaks alleges he was working for Century Brass Works when he suffered an injury while working. Although Speaks does not specify what his injury was or when he sustained it, he does say it rendered him temporarily totally disabled. In turn, he applied for benefits under the Illinois Workers’ Compensation Act, according to the complaint.

“Because of the workers’ compensation case, the defendant began actively searching for pretext to discharge plaintiff,” the suit states.

On May 19, Century Brass Works fired Speaks, the complaint says.

Due to his job loss, Speaks claims he lost income and benefits, suffered mental anguish and experienced pain.

He is seeking a judgment of more than $100,000, plus costs. He is being represented in the case by Matthew P. Young of The Kuehn Law Firm in Belleville.

St. Clair County Circuit Court case number 14-L-203.
