Patient alleges leg amputation due to negligent care from St. Elizabeth's Hospital, physicians

Lawsuits

BELLEVILLE — A patient is suing St. Elizabeth's Hospital and two of its physicians alleging their negligent care led to his leg amputation.

Eugene Boron and Mary Boron filed a complaint Oct. 13 in the St. Clair County Circuit Court against St. Elizabeth's Hospital of the Hospital Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis, Breana Gawrys, M.D., Michael Kim, M.D., and HSHS Medical Group Inc., alleging negligence.

The plaintiffs allege in their complaint that while Eugene Boron was being treated at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in December 2019, the defendants failed to "apply the knowledge and use the skill and care ordinarily used by a reasonably well-qualified health care provider."

Specifically, the Borons claim that the defendants failed to provide "sufficient skin pressure relief measures," such as turning over every two hours, failed to perform daily skin examinations and failed to timely treat Eugene Boron's decubitus ulcer wound.

The Borons claim the defendants' alleged negligence led to the amputation of Eugene Boron's right leg below the knee. The plaintiffs claim Eugene Boron has not only suffered pain and "loss of enjoyment of a normal life," but also has incurred medical treatment costs.

The Borons seek compensation of more than $50,000 and all other just relief. They are represented by Joseph Bartholomew of Cook, Bartholomew, Shevlin, Cook  Jones LLP in Belleville.
