The owner of a Washington Park motel is being sued for negligence over a fire which caused the death of Katrice S. Carraway and her unborn child on March 27, 2005.

The mother of the victim, Edna Carraway, claims the hotel was constructed with bars that prevented a safe emergency exit. She is seeking in excess of $100,000 from Diptara Inc. -- owner of Econo Inn.

According to the wrongful death suit filed Jan. 31 in St. Clair County Circuit Court, Carraway also claims the motel did not have adequate sprinklers or fire alarm system. She also alleges there was not a proper means of egress at the motel located at 5307 Bunkum Rd.

Katrice Carraway also is survived by a son, Darrion M. Hill and her father, Morris Carraway.

Edna Carraway is represented by Gerald M. Dunne of Clayton, Mo.
