Injured SIUC worker sues contractors in St. Clair County

A construction worker injured on a job site at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale is suing the project's general contractor in St. Clair County Circuit Court.

Stephen Porter, represented by Eric Kirkpatrick of Belleville, claims he fell from a walkway on a job site on Nov. 23, 2004. He is suing the general contractor Barlow Projects and project engineer BRiC Partnership for failing to equip the walkway with guardrails.

The suit, filed May 15, does not indicate the nature of the construction project.

Porter's wife, Diane Porter, also is seeking damages for loss of consortium.

Stephen Porter was employed by a project subcontractor, Power Maintenance Construction, but the complaint does not state what type of work Porter performed. The complaint also is not specific about his injuries.

"He has suffered difigurement," the complaint states. "He has suffered the loss of a normal life. He has been prevented from working as a result of his injuries and has and will in the future incur lost wages from his employment as a result of said injuries."

The six-count lawsuit seeks at least $300,000 in damages, plus costs.
