Doctor removed part of leg bone without consent, suit says

A Madison County surgeon is accused of removing part of a woman's leg bone without the patient's consent.

Jennifer Pfister filed a lawsuit Oct. 24 in Madison County Circuit Court against Dr. Paulo Bicahlo.

Pfister says she went to see Dr. Bicahlo in October 2011 to be treated for pain in her left knee. Pfister claims Dr. Bicahlo ordered an MRI on her knee which allegedly revealed torn cartilage. Pfister says Dr. Bicahlo performed arthroscopic surgery to repair the torn cartilage about two weeks later at Anderson Hospital in Maryville.

Pfister contends that during the surgery Dr. Bicahlo removed a large portion of bone from her left femur. She claims Dr. Bicahlo never informed her before the surgery that he would be removing bone samples for testing.

Pfister accuses Dr. Bicahlo of medical malpractice and asks for more than $50,000 in damages for medical bills, loss of income and courts fees.

Attorney Michael R. Wesley of Wood River represents her. They request a jury trial.
