Illinois Truth Team knocks 'great event' tweet after Frerichs and Callis event

An Illinois watchdog group is critical of State Sen. Mike Frerich's (D-Champaign) over what it says appears to be a low attendance fundraiser in DeWitt County with congressional hopeful Ann Callis.

On June 28, Frerichs tweeted that he had a "great event" in Clinton with Callis and the DeWitt County Democrats.

The senator posted a photo with the tweet showing four people in attendance, prompting a response from the Illinois Truth Team – a group of residents who believe the state is heading in the wrong direction.

“Perhaps Big Mike Frerichs and his team should be thinking twice about what they’re posting to their social networks," a post on the organization’s website says. "This isn’t exactly sending the right signals.

“If I was Ann Callis and her team, I’d be running – as fast as I can – away from Team Mike Frerichs. I wouldn’t want to be sucked down that hole that always seems to be created by his own mis-steps.”

Frerichs and the Dewitt County Democrats did not respond for requests for comment.

Callis, a former Madison County judge, is running against U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis, a freshman Republican from Taylorville, in November's general election.

Callis stepped down from a 19-year career on the bench last year to make a bid for the 13th congressional district. In the March Democratic primary, she easily defeated challengers George Gollin and David Green, allowing her to go on to face Davis in the November general election.
