Surgeon accused of damaging spinal cord in St. Clair County suit

A Belleville surgeon and his practice are accused of malpractice in a suit filed April 24 in St. Clair County Circuit Court.

Laura Mannix filed suit against Dr. William Sprich and M.S.A. Alliance doing business as Neurological Surgery of Southern Illinois.

In her complaint, Mannix claims Sprich performed a surgical procedure known as an anterior cervical diskectomy and fusion at C6-C7 with iliac crest bone marrow aspiration on April 24, 2011. However, during the procedure, Sprich allegedly damaged Mannix’s spinal cord, her left nerve root and her left sympathetic nerve, according to the complaint.

As a result of the procedure, Mannix developed Horner’s syndrome, which is a condition marked by the drooping of an eyelid and occasionally by the absence of sweat on the side of a person’s face, the suit states. She also suffered disfigurement, disability, emotional distress and pain; lost wages; and incurred medical costs, the complaint says.

In her two-count complaint, Mannix seeks a judgment of more than $100,000, plus costs.

David L. Mannix and Barney R. Mundorf of Guin, Martin and Mundork in Collinsville will be representing her.

St. Clair County Circuit Court case number: 13-L-215.
