BELLEVILLE—A homeowner is suing his neighbor after her home caught fire and spread to the plaintiff's house.

Reb Long filed a complaint on Nov. 21 in St. Clair County Circuit Court against Brittney Gilmore, alleging she breached her duty to exercise reasonable care to avoid damaging other properties.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that on Feb. 18, 2017, her home located at 1727 St. Louis Avenue in East St. Louis was damaged by a fire that originated from the defendant's home.

As a result, Long claims he sustained property damage, pain and suffering, emotional distress and loss of enjoyment of his property. he also claims he has incurred attorney's fees from a dispute with the defendant's insurer.

The plaintiff holds Gilmore responsible because the defendant allegedly negligently allowed a fire to start in her home and to spread to the plaintiff's home.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks damages of more than $50,000, plus costs, attorney's fees, and all further relief that the court may deem just and proper. He is represented by Matthew P. Young of Kuehn, Beasley & Young in Belleville, IL.
