EDWARDSVILLE — A Madison County woman is suing a Granite City landlord, alleging her negligence led to a fire that killed a relative of the plaintiff.

Lisa Jones, as special administrator of the estate of Debra Condor, filed a lawsuit Aug. 26 in Madison County Circuit Court against Sandra Hernandez, alleging violation of the Smoke Detector Act.

According to the complaint, on March 21, Condor was a tenant in a room in defendant's house, at 1621 Courtney Blvd. in Granite City, when a fire occurred. The suit says Condor died that same day from injuries suffered due to the fire.

Her untimely death, the lawsuit states, caused her next of kin grief, sorrow and great pecuniary loss. The plaintiff alleges Hernandez failed to install a sufficient number of smoke detectors, failed to implement fire safety policy for her tenants and failed to provide written information regarding a smoke detector.

Jones seeks trial by jury, judgment of more than $50,000, plus court costs.

She is represented by attorney George H. Albers of Roth Law Offices LLC in Granite City.
