Consumer claims 'natural' label on cleaning products is false

By Molly English-Bowers | Apr 4, 2016

BELLEVILLE – A woman has filed a class-action suit alleging false "natural" claims were made by the manufacturer of household cleaning products.

Gayle Greenwood, individually and on behalf of all others similarly situated, filed the suit March 22 in St. Clair County Circuit Court against Method Products PBC.

According to the complaint, Method cleaning products are sold with the label “natural." The plaintiff claims the label is false and the products contain a number of synthetic ingredients.

The plaintiff's suit says she seeks damages for herself and other individuals for the defendant's false, deceptive, unfair and misleading advertising, in violation of the Illinois Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Business Practices Act.

As a result of the alleged deceptive labels, the defendant was able to charge more and the plaintiff and class members paid a premium for supposed natural products, according to the complaint. But because they are not natural, the products are worth less than the plaintiff and class members paid for them, the suit alleges.

In addition to the alleged violation of the ICFA, the suit cites a second count of unjust enrichment against the defendant.

The plaintiff seeks certification of this case as a class action, pre- and post-judgment interest, compensatory damages or a requirement that the defendant pay restitution, attorney fees and court costs, and other relief the court deems proper. She is represented by Matthew H. Armstrong of the Armstrong Law Firm in St.  Louis, David C. Nelson of Nelson & Nelson Attorneys at Law PC in Belleville, and Stuart L. Cochran of Cochran Law PLLC in Dallas.
