Brothers allege Meridian Village Care Center's negligence led to mother's death

By Molly English-Bowers | Feb 24, 2016

EDWARDSVILLE – Two brothers are suing a Glen Carbon long-term health care facility, alleging the inadequate care their mother received led to her death.

Micheal T. Miller and David B. Miller, co-executors of the estate of Jean M. Miller, deceased, filed the lawsuit Feb. 16 in Madison County Circuit Court against Meridian Village Association, doing business as Meridian Village Care Center, alleging negligence and violations of the Illinois Nursing Home Care Act and the Illinois Survival Statue.

According to the complaint, Jean M. Miller, was a resident of the defendant's Glen Carbon location. She had been admitted there Nov. 26, 2014, after surgery for a hip fracture. The suit says on March 21, 2015, she was transferred to the hospital for evaluation of respiratory distress.

Upon admission to the hospital, the lawsuit alleges, Miller was found to have multiple pressure ulcers, sepsis and severe dehydration. The suit says Meridian Village Care Center owed a duty to the deceased to care for her appropriately.

However, the complaint states, the defendant was negligent in failing to provide proper nursing care, failing to employ sufficient staff to provide said medical care, failing to provide followup assessments, failing to notify the deceased's physician of significant changes in her condition and failing to implement a regular program of care to promote healing and prevent infection.

Jean M. Miller died as a result of complications from her injuries, the suit states.

Michael and David Miller seek more than $50,000, court costs and other relief the court deems just. They are represented by attorney Robert H. Gregory of the Law Office of Robert H. Gregory PC in East Alton.
