Family blames Memorial Hospital of Carbondale for relative's wrongful death

BELLEVILLE – A woman is suing a number of health professionals, alleging negligence over a wrongful death.

Sarah Young, as special administrator of the estate of Travis Young, filed a lawsuit Jan. 29 in St. Clair County Circuit Court against Dr. Reno Ahuja, Holistic Psychiatry Inc., Dr. Naeem Akhtar Qureshi, Southern Illinois Psychiatry LLC and Memorial Hospital of Carbondale, alleging wrongful death.

According to the complaint, from Nov. 6, 2013, to Feb. 7, 2014, Ahuja, Holistic Psychiatry, Qureshi, Southern Illinois Psychiatry and Memorial Hospital of Carbondale were all providing medical care to Travis Young. She alleges several negligent acts led to his death on Feb. 7, 2014.

The lawsuit states the defendants failed to inform the decedent about dangerous drug combinations, failed to instruct him to taper and discontinue the use of a certain pharmaceutical, and, in the case of Memorial Hospital of Carbondale, failed to Qureshi about a treatment it had given Young before he died.

The plaintiff claims all negligent actions led to the death of Travis Young.

As a result, the suit states, Young's survivors have been left without his services, companionship, comfort, guidance, counsel, love and support that they would have received had he not died.

Sarah Young seeks at least $50,000 from each defendant, court costs and a six-person jury trial. She is represented by attorney Joseph A. Bartholomew of Cook, Ysursa, Bartholomew, Brauer & Shevlin Ltd. in Belleville.
