Motorist blames St. Clair County for vehicle collision that led to injuries

BELLEVILLE – A female motorist is suing St. Clair County, alleging negligence over injuries she says she sustained when her vehicle was hit by a municipal truck.

Debra S. Ford filed the lawsuit Jan. 19 in St. Clair County Circuit Court against Eddie L. Johnson II, St. Clair County and the St. Clair County Highway Department, alleging negligence.

According to the complaint, on Jan. 23, 2015, Ford was driving her vehicle on South 11th Street near the intersection with state Route 15 in Belleville while Johnson was driving a Ford pickup truck along the same stretch of roadway.  The suit says Johnson's vehicle is owned by St. Clair County, and the defendant was working for the St. Clair County Highway Department at the time of the collision.

The lawsuit states Johnson was negligent in failing to reduce the speed of the vehicle to avoid an accident, driving too closely to the plaintiff's vehicle of the plaintiff, and failing to brake, steer or otherwise maneuver the truck to avoid a collision.

As a result of the defendant's negligence, the lawsuit says, the plaintiff was injured, has experience pain, has paid and will continue to pay medical bills, has been disabled, has lost her earning capacity and has lost wages.

Ford seeks at least $50,000 from each defendant, plus court costs. She is represented by attorney Rodney D. Caffey of The Caffey Law Firm LLC in Godfrey.
