Man alleges injuries while installing engine on barge

By Dan Harkins | Jul 21, 2015

A Texas man injured while installing an engine on a barge is suing a crane operator and his boss for supervising an unsafe workplace.

Lewis Condiff filed a complaint on July 1 in Madison County Circuit Court against Genesis Marine LLC and Mike's Inc.

On June 10, 2012, Condiff claims he was working as a tankerman for Genesis Maritime on a barge, trying to put a screw in a 5,000-pound motor being lowered into the barge.

According to the lawsuit, the crane operator allegedly failed to follow instructions and lowered the motor more than needed, smashing Condiff's right hand and thumb.

The defendants are cited with negligence, unseaworthiness, and maintenance and cure -- all part of maritime law.

The plaintiff seeks damages of more than $150,000, plus pre- and post-judgment interest, attorneys' fees and court costs.

The plaintiff is represented by Brian Beckcom of VB Attorneys in Houston and Allyson M. Romani of Shrader and Associates LLP in Glen Carbon.

Madison County Circuit Court case number 15-L-840.
