The mother of a Marissa woman is suing a St. Louis hospital claiming her daughter died after complications from surgery on her skull.

Sandra Hall, special administrator of the estate of Chelsea Weekley, filed a lawsuit July 19 in St. Clair County Circuit Court against Dr. Ann Marie Flannery Dr. Raghuram Sampath and SSM Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital.

According to the complaint, Weekley was admitted to Cardinal Glennon Hospital on July 20 for a right frontal cranioplasty with Mastergraft surgery, a procedure to repair a deformity in Weekley's skull. The operation was also to include an injection of a protein to induce bone and cartilage growth.

Hall says the surgery was performed by Dr. Flannery, a neurosurgeon, and Dr. Sampath, a resident training in neurosurgery. During the operation, Weekley's cortex, white matter and overlying membrane were allegedly damaged and, Hall claims, the 18-year-old patient was sent home less than 24 hours later without seizure medication.

Four days after her surgery, the teenager allegedly suffered a seizure and died at her home. Hall accuses the hospital and its doctors of negligence and wrongful death. She seeks more than $225,000 in damages and court costs.

Attorney Rhonda D. Fiss of Belleville represents Hall.
