District Judge Stiehl sued over 2011 auto accident in Belleville

U.S. District Judge William D. Stiehl is being sued in St. Clair County Circuit Court by a man who claims Stiehl failed to obey a stop sign.

Amos C. Mosby Jr. claims he was driving a 2002 Infiniti east on McClintock Avenue near its intersection with Garden Boulevard on Aug. 13, 2011, at about 1:20 p.m. when Stiehl, who was driving a 2005 Deville Cadillac south on Garden Boulevard at the same intersection, allegedly ran a stop sign and struck Mosby’s vehicle.

Stiehl was nominated to his post at the Southern District of Illinois by President Ronald Reagan and has served since 1986. He was born in 1925.

Because of the collision, Mosby claims he suffered lumbar, cervical and thoracic strain and sprain; sustained a left shoulder strain; and endured mental and emotional pain and suffering, according to the complaint filed Aug. 5. He also incurred medical costs and lost wages, the suit states.

Stiehl allegedly failed to maintain a proper lookout, failed to stop at a clearly marked stop sign, failed to yield the right-of-way, failed to obey a traffic control device and drove through an intersection without first determining whether it was safe to do so, the suit claims.

In his complaint, Mosby is seeking a judgment of more than $50,000.

He will be represented by Amy Collignon Gunn of The Simon Law Firm in St. Louis.

St. Clair County Circuit Court case number: 13-L-408.
