What kind of parents want bad prospects for their children?

“Yeah, we did better than our parents, got more schooling
and more rewarding jobs and lived happier lives, but we’d
prefer our own kids to be less fortunate than we were.”

Have you ever heard a child’s parents say anything so despicable, that they truly desire a worse life for their offspring than they had themselves? No, and you almost certainly never will, because parents -- with few exceptions -- want a better future for their kids.

If there are such parents anywhere with such malicious wishes, they obviously have sense enough to keep their mouths shut and not risk the wrath of outraged peers.

Here in Illinois, you may not find any parents advocating diminished circumstances for the next generation, but you will find millions of Illinoisans repeatedly taking actions that ensure just that – by continually supporting the harmful policies and reelecting the politicians and judges most responsible for driving our productive citizens and businesses into exile and running our economy into the ground.

It doesn’t have to be this way. Illinois once had an economic and legal climate that was friendly to business rather than hostile, and protective of the worker. It can be that way again. Each generation in the Land of Lincoln once looked forward to a better future than the last, and our children should be able to do the same.

But something must change. We’ve got to stop doing the wrong things, the things that keep making things worse.

This past Monday, Rep. Dwight Kay of Glen Carbon introduced a package of legislation that would reform our state’s liability provisions, our commercial tax structures, and our business regulations. If enacted, the changes would make Illinois more appealing to business interests, create more jobs, get our economy moving again, and strengthen the foundation for a brighter future for our children.

Isn’t this what we all want?
