Belleville woman sues ex-boyfriend over decade's worth of work

Swanson

A Belleville woman is suing an ex-boyfriend she says refuses to pay for more than a decade's worth of work at his construction company.

Helia Grider filed a complaint on Sept. 26 in St. Clair County Circuit Court against Martin T. Hubbard and M. Hubbard Construction Inc.

In the petition, Grider says she and Hubbard lived together for 12 years. During that time, she says they agreed to "mutually pool all income and equally divide all proceeds from any endeavor." Grider says she and the defendant also acquired various real and personal property during the course of their relationship.

Grider says she added value to Hubbard's construction business by maintaining records, serving as his secretary and managing his appointments. She says she worked about 40 hours a week and expected to be compensated. Grider says Hubbard refuses to pay her. She says her employment with M. Hubbard Construction and her romantic relationship with Hubbard ended in November 2011.

Grider contends Hubbard has refused to equitably divide the couple's property and failed to compensate her for the work performed on behalf of M. Hubbard Construction for more than a decade. She accuses the defendants of breach of contract and unjust enrichment and asks to be awarded more than $100,000.

Attorney Michael J. Swanson of Edwardsville is representing Grider.
