A St. Clair County railroad worker is suing his employer for injuries he allegedly received while walking alongside a train track in Cahokia.
Sammie Calvin filed a lawsuit in St. Clair County Circuit Court Sept. 10 against Union Pacific Railroad.
Calvin says he was working as a conductor/brakeman for Union Pacific in September 2009. As he was moving a train from the Alton and Southern Yard in East St. Louis, Calvin claims his duties required him to jump off his locomotive and manually throw a crossover switch at the Jerome Lane intersection. Calvin alleges he had to walk through an overgrown area along the track and tripped over a log or branch that was hidden by the brush.
Calvin accuses Union Pacific of negligence for failing to maintain a safe working environment. He contends the railroad company is responsible for keeping the area around its tracks clean. He asks for more than $50,000 in damages for medical bills, lost wages and court fees.
Attorney John T. Papa of Granite City represents Calvin.
