Driver claims he was rear-ended on I-64 exit ramp

Hubbard

A Maryville man says he was hurt when he was rear-ended by an alleged drunk driver.

Philip Huniak filed a lawsuit Aug. 15 against Geoffrey Burris in St. Clair County Circuit Court.

Huniak was driving a 2005 Ford Expedition heading north on Illinois Route 159 in Fairview Heights in September 2011, according to the complaint. Huniak says he was stopped at the traffic light on the exit ramp for I-64 when he was hit from behind by a rental car being driven by Burris. Huniak alleges Burris was drunk at the time of the crash with a blood-alcohol level higher than the legal limit of .08.

Huniak accuses the Carterville resident of negligence and driving while intoxicated. He seeks more than $100,000 in damages for medical expenses, lost wages and costs of the lawsuit.

Attorney Katie A. Hubbard of Edwardsville represents Huniak. They ask for a jury trial.
