The son of a recently deceased woman has filed suit against the doctors who he claims caused her death after they negligently failed to diagnose her heart problem.

Richard Gibbs claims his mother, Donna Gibbs, came under the care of defendant Drs. Donna Boone, S.S. Kurella, Vincente Zata and Vincente S. Zata in August 2010.

While under the doctors' care, Donna Gibbs suffered a heart attack and insufficient flow of oxygen to her brain, causing her sudden, "untimely" death, according to the complaint filed Aug. 8 in Madison County Circuit Court.

Richard Gibbs claims his mother's life could have been saved had her doctors ordered a cardiology consult or diagnosed her with myocardial ischemia, which occurs when one of the arteries in the heart is partially blocked, restricting the blood flow to the heart. In addition, doctors failed to order appropriate testing, failed to take an appropriate history and misread an EKG, the suit states.

Because of his mother's death, Richard Gibbs lost her love, companionship, society, guidance and support, the complaint says.

In his eight-count complaint, Richard Gibbs seeks a judgment of more than $600,000, plus costs.

Samantha S. Unsell of Thomas Q. Keefe Jr. in Belleville will be representing him.

Madison County Circuit Court case number: 12-L-1228.
