Vascular surgeon sued over vein bypass operation

Bartholomew

A man has filed suit against the doctor who he claims caused him to undergo a right leg amputation.

Myrel J. Heatherly Jr. claims his doctor, defendant Hans H. Moosa, negligently performed a type of surgery referred to as cryo preserved vein bypass instead of a remote bypass to treat an infected area. Because of the type of bypass performed, Heatherly was forced to lose his leg, according to the complaint filed June 22 in St. Clair County Circuit Court.

In addition to his lost limb, Heatherly endured constant pain and suffering, lost his enjoyment of a normal life and incurred medical costs, the suit states. He also experienced an impaired earning capacity, the complaint says.

In addition to Moosa, Heatherly names the doctor's employer, M.S.A. Alliance doing business as Southern Illinois Vascular Surgery, as a defendant.

In his two-count complaint, Heatherly is seeking a judgment of more than $100,000, plus costs.

He will be represented by Joseph A. Bartholomew of Cook, Ysursa, Bartholomew, Brauer and Shevlin in Belleville.

St. Clair County Circuit Court case number: 12-L-330.
