Allegedly intoxicated driver rear ends vehicle at 72 mph, suit says

A woman has filed suit against the allegedly intoxicated driver who she claims rear-ended her vehicle at more than 70 miles per hour.

Brittney M. Adams claims she was driving a Pontiac east on St. Clair Avenue just east of its intersection with Edgewood in Fairview Heights on May 16, 2010. At the same time, defendant Edwin Saunders was driving a red truck east in the same direction at about 72-miles-per-hour when he rear-ended Adams's vehicle, according to the complaint filed May 9 in St. Clair County Circuit Court.

Because of the collision, Adams sustained serious injuries to her back, experienced pain and suffering and endured a disability, the suit states. She also lost her enjoyment of life, lost wages and lost her wage earning capacity, the complaint says.

Adams blames Sanders, who had an "overwhelming odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from his breath, bloodshot and glassy eyes, and exhibited slurred, disorganized and confused speech, was unable to keep his balance, stumbling and admitted he had been drinking," for causing the accident, saying he negligently drove too fast, failed to keep his vehicle under proper control and failed to keep a lookout for other traffic.

In her complaint, Adams is seeking a judgment of more than $50,000, plus costs and other relief the court deems just.

Michael L. McGlynn of McGlynn and McGlynn in Belleville will be representing her.

St. Clair County Circuit Court case number: 12-L-246.
