CR Bard sued in St. Clair County claiming mesh caused staph infection

A man has filed suit against the manufacturers of a mesh that he says caused him to develop a staph infection.

Patrick Voss claims he developed an inguinal hernia and visited Dr. Charles Lane at Anderson Hospital for care.

On April 15, 2010, Lane repaired the hernia by inserting a mesh plug and patch overlay manufactured by defendant C.R. Bard, according to the complaint filed April 13 in St. Clair County Circuit Court. During the same day, Voss developed a staph aureus infection due to the mesh, the suit states.

Because of his subsequent illness, Voss experienced permanent pain, mental anguish, disfigurement and disability and has been prevented from attending to his usual duties, the complaint says. In addition, he claims he has incurred substantial medical costs.

Voss blames C.R. Bard for causing his injuries, saying the company negligently designed the mesh in such a way that it became contaminated, manufactured the mesh so it had the potential to cause a staph infection and failed to provide sufficient warnings about the dangerous nature of the mesh.

In his two-count complaint, Voss is seeking a judgment of more than $100,000 but less than $150,000.

He will be represented by Samantha S. Unsell of Belleville.

St. Clair County Circuit Court case number: 12-L-190.
