Belleville OB/GYN named in med mal complaint over fallopian tube surgery

Papa

An O'Fallon woman claims a Belleville surgeon who was supposed to remove her fallopian tube and ovary could not find them during the operation.

Venora V. Dorsey-Gentry filed a lawsuit Jan. 3 in St. Clair County Circuit Court against Dr. Lorna L. O'Young, Women to Women P.C. and Protestant Memorial Medical Center, also known as Memorial Hospital.

Dorsey-Gentry says she underwent surgery at Memorial Hospital in Belleville in January 2010. According to the complaint, Dr. O'Young was supposed to perform a left salpingo-oophorectomy, removing one fallopian tube and ovary from Dorsey-Gentry's body.

Dorsey-Gentry says she underwent the surgery but claims Dr. O'Young "carelessly and negligently failed to find or remove the fallopian tube and ovary." The patient says Dr. O'Young was further negligent for allegedly failing to consult any other specialists for assistance during the surgery and for allegedly failing to follow-up after the procedure to determine why it was unsuccessful.

Dorsey-Gentry says O'Young and the hospital are to blame for a repeated surgery to remove her fallopian tube and ovary as originally intended. She says she has lost normal enjoyment of life, lost wages and been forced to pay for unnecessary medical care.

Dorsey-Gentry is asking to be paid more than $150,000 in damages along with court costs. Attorney John T. Papa of Granite City is representing her.
