A St. Clair County woman has filed suit against Wal-Mart, alleging she fell on a patch of ice as she was attempting to traverse the store's parking lot.

Yvette Guthrie alleges she was walking to her vehicle, which was parked in Wal-Mart's parking lot at 12495 State Route 143 in Highland, on Nov. 26 at about 4 p.m. when she slipped on ice.

Because of her fall, Guthrie sustained permanent injuries to her right ankle and experienced great physical pain and mental anguish, according to the complaint filed Sept. 22 in Madison County Circuit Court. In addition, she incurred medical costs and lost wages, the suit states.

Wal-Mart negligently failed to ensure its parking lot was free of ice, failed provide adequate lighting in all areas of its parking lot, failed to warn of the parking lot's condition and failed to protect Guthrie from falling on the ice, the complaint says.

In her suit, Guthrie is seeking a judgment of more than $75,000, plus costs and other relief the court deems just.

Rhonda D. Fiss of The Law Office of Rhonda D. Fiss in Belleville will be representing her.
