Security failed to respond to senior's emergency, suit says

A woman has filed suit against the apartment complex where her recently deceased mother lived, alleging its security personnel failed to timely respond to her mother's complaints of being short of breath.

Dianne Sharp claims her mother, Doris M. Sharp, was living at Touchette Elderly Apartments II in Centerville when she began experiencing breathing difficulties. In turn, Doris M. Sharp made an emergency call to defendant Yale Security as she was instructed to do, according to the complaint filed Sept. 29 in St. Clair County Circuit Court.

"Contrary to the service that Yale agreed to provide, its agents and servants did not timely respond to Doris M. Sharp's emergency call and as a result she died," the suit states.

Because of her mother's death, Dianne Sharp incurred funeral costs and lost her mother's services, companionship, comfort, instruction, guidance and counsel, the complaint says.

In addition to Touchette and Barcome, Dianne Sharp names Barcom as a defendant, saying it was charged with the task of monitoring emergency calls from the apartment complex.

Dianne Sharp blames Yale, Touchette Elderly Apartments and Barcom Electronic for contributing to her mother's death, saying they negligently failed to timely respond to the emergency call, failed to properly train their employees on emergency procedures and employed unqualified personnel to work for them.

In her three-count complaint, Dianne Sharp is seeking a judgment of more than $150,000, plus costs.
