A former Norfolk Southern Railway Company employee claims he sustained severe and permanent injuries to his spine, knee and shoulders because of repetitive injuries caused by his work for the railroad.

Randy Allen filed a lawsuit March 8 in Madison County Circuit Court against Norfolk Southern Railway Company.

Allen claims that during his employment as a welder and machine operator with Norfolk Southern Railway, he sustained numerous repetitive traumas while repairing railroad tracks.

In addition to his injuries, Allen suffered great pain and mental anguish and lost earnings because of his work, according to the complaint. In addition, he incurred medical costs, the suit states.

He blames Norfolk for causing his injuries, saying it negligently failed to provide safe tools and proper equipment, failed to provide adequate supervision, failed to warn of hazardous conditions, allowed unsafe practices to become standard and assigned Allen work that it knew would injure him.

In his complaint, Allen seeks a judgment of more than $50,000, plus costs.

Gregory M. Tobin of Pratt and Tobin in East Alton will be representing him.

Madison County Circuit Court case number: 11-L-211.
