An Alton resident claims she suffered severe left knee injuries, which caused her to undergo surgery, after she fell on stairs in a dimly lit hallway.
Monica Knight filed a lawsuit Jan. 24 in Madison County Circuit Court against Choice Properties and Investment, Sugarloaf Landscapes and Ajay Kansal.
Knight claims she was walking through the hallways of an apartment building at 1028 East Fifth St. in Alton when she tripped on the stairs as she attempted to climb them.
Because of her fall, Knight incurred medical costs and has been unable to perform her usual duties, according to the complaint.
Knight blames the reason for her fall on the dimly lit common area in the building where she was renting an apartment.
"Prior to the date in question Plaintiff told Defendant that the lighting was inadequate, and in fact, the lighting had been out for
several weeks prior to the incident," the suit states.
She says the defendants -- who owned the property -- are at fault for her fall, saying they negligently failed to provide proper lighting for their tenants, failed to inspect the property for proper lighting, failed to maintain the lighting in the common areas
and failed to timely replace the lighting.
In her three-count suit, Knight seeks a judgment of more than $150,000, plus costs.
Michael P. Glisson of Williamson, Webster, Falb and Glisson in Alton will be representing her.
