St. Jacob woman claims injuries in auto accident

A St. Jacob woman has filed suit against the driver who she claims failed to yield the right-of-way to her at a traffic light.

Susan Hanratty claims she was driving east on Edwardsville Road on Feb. 10, 2009, at about 5:49 a.m. when defendant George Watson, who was driving west on the same road, attempted to make a left turn from Edwardsville Road onto the southbound Interstate 55 entrance ramp.

"That at the date and time in question, Defendant George Watson entered into the intersection when his traffic control device did not have a green electric arrow," the suit filed June 8 in Madison County Circuit Court states.

As a result, Watson crashed into the front of Hanratty's vehicle, according to the complaint.

Because of the collision, Hanratty suffered serious, painful and permanent injuries to her right ankle and mid-back; became sick, sore, lame and disordered; suffered physical pain and mental anguish; and incurred medical costs, the complaint says.

Hanratty blames Watson for causing the collision, saying he negligently failed to keep a proper lookout, failed to exercise due standard of care, failed to avoid a collision, failed to reduce his speed to avoid a collision and violated Illinois statute.

In her two-count complaint, Hanratty is seeking a judgment of more than $100,000, plus costs and other relief the court deems just.

Ely Hadowsky of St. Louis will be representing her.

Madison County Circuit Court case number: 10-L-600.
