Doctor unnecessarily removed man's kidney, suit claims

A man and his wife claim a urologist may have unnecessarily removed the man's kidney.

John and Jackie Kruep filed a lawsuit April 12 in Madison County Circuit Court against Demetrios Katsikas and Urology Consultants.

The Krueps claim Katsikas negligently performed a radical nephrectomy on John Kruep Sept. 23.

Instead of performing the surgery, which involves the full removal of a kidney, Katsikas should have attempted an exploratory surgery or a partial nephrectomy, according to the complaint. In addition, Katsikas, who works for Urology Consultants, failed to conduct additional observation of the lesion prior to the radical nephrectomy, the suit states.

As a result of the surgery Katsikas performed, John Kruep suffered permanent pain, mental anguish and disfigurment; incurred medical costs; lost wages; and was prevented from attending to his usual duties and affairs, the complaint says.

Jackie Kruep claims she lost her husband's love, companionship, consortium, support and services because of the incident.

In their four-count suit, the Krueps seek a judgment of more than $300,000, plus costs.

Samantha Unsell of Thomas Q. Keefe Jr. in Belleville will be representing them.

Madison County Circuit Court case number: 10-L-414.
